Great Sierra Mine Historic Site Details

This site on Tioga Hill was once the largest mining operation in what would later become Yosemite National Park. Built to extract silver from the Sheepherder Lode (named after a shepherd who staked several claims here), the mine was operated by the Great Sierra Consolidated Silver Mining Company. The company also built a company town here called Dana (later relocated to a lower-altitude setting in Bennettville). They spent a fortune developing the mine, but never managed to tap into the mother lode. While the mine shafts have all been buried, visitors can still see stone cabins, a powder house, and a blacksmith shop dating from the mining period.
