The contrasting landscapes of glacial lakes and volcanic peaks are on full display when you take this short route through Lee Vining Canyon. On your right, you have Mono Lake, whose water is two to three times saltier than the ocean. To your left is Mono Craters, an alien-like mountain range created by volcanic activity. The entire drive is only 12 miles long, although you can make a full day out of it by visiting the different attractions nearby. Hiking, ice-climbing, cycling, fishing, and rafting are all possible just a few feet away from the byway.
