Dana Meadows (T38) Details
Once grazing land for immigrant Basque sheepherders, this alpine meadow was named for James Dwight Dana, a Yale geologist and natural historian who worked at Yosemite. Its high-altitude location (9,728 feet) means that summer can be fleeting here. It's not unheard of for Dana Meadow to be covered in more than 10 feet of snow in winter, and the white stuff can fall here practically any month of the year. Look for carved initials left by lonely sheepherders in some of the trees in the meadow. Roadside marker: T38
