Big Meadow View (B6) Details
An interpretive sign here describes the glacial process which helped create this valley. The meadow below, and much of the area around you, was the site of the Big Meadow Fire that began on August 26, 2009 and was the result of a prescribed fire gone out of control. The fire lasted for 11 days and burned a total of 7,418 acres. The controlled burn was supposed to remain within a 91-acre perimeter. Prescribed fire, also known as a controlled burn, refers to the controlled application of fire by fire management staff from the National Park Service. The fires are planned months in advance and are ignited under specified weather conditions that help restore health to fire-adapted environments. Roadside marker: B6
