Today, rather than cranes, the great blue heron can be seen here on occasion. Sierra Nevada meadows - or flats - are rare. Many were the result of glaciers retreating and the resulting lakes were filled with silt and sand. Crane Flat is located at 6,200 feet and is well beyond the reach of the glaciers. During the summer, the Crane Flat area is a busy hub since it serves as an intersection for the popular Tioga Road and visitors approaching from the Big Oak Flat Road. A gas station and a popular summer campground are located here. Roadside marker: B7
