Bumpass Hell Trail Details
Named after a settler who badly burned his leg after falling into a boiling pool, Bumpass Hell is the largest concentration of hydrothermal features in Lassen. You'll see the Big Boiler, the biggest fumarole in the park, where temperatures have been measured as high as 322 degrees Fahrenheit. This is a must-see for all visitors to Lassen - don't miss it. Bumpass Hell is quite beautiful, showcasing an array of boiling pools and acidic soil stained into unusual colors. Don't leave your camera in the car for this one. Bumpass Hell can be reached via an easy, well-marked 1.5-mile (one way) trail that begins from a parking lot opposite of Lake Helen. Though categorized as an easy trail, remember that you are at 8,000 feet, so it may seem moderately difficult at times if you are not adjusted to the altitude. However, the Bumpass Hell Trail doesn't have too much change in elevation other than a 100-foot drop into the basin. Remember that staying on the boardwalk is very important here, as hydrothermal waters are typically extraordinarily acidic and hot: don't burn yourself like Bumpass!
