Lassen Peak Details

Visit the highest point in Lassen National Park by hiking to the top of 10,463-foot Lassen Peak, the southernmost volcano in the Cascades. The trail begins at 8,500 feet and climbs 2.5 miles and 2,000 feet one-way to the summit. Hikers will enjoy amazing vistas of the park and its surrounding areas, and you'll see the lingering effects of the most recent eruption, which took place in 1915. At the summit, you'll find reminders that Lassen is still an active (but dormant) volcano: just take one whiff of the omnipresent rotten-egg scent of hydrogen sulfide. This trail is steep and can be rocky as it switchbacks up to the summit. Bring adequate water and proper footwear. The Lassen Peak Trail has its own trailhead, located off the main park road just past the turnoff for the Bumpass Hell trailhead.
