Bumpass Hell Details
This 16-acre area in Lesson Volcanic National Park is a bubbling and hissy landscape of boiling hot springs. This is caused by the underground volcanic heat that seeps steam through the cracks and fissures of the earths crust, creating mud pots and sulfur-smelling springs. While you can not go near them (they will burn you quite badly as they did to Kendall Bumpass in the 1800s), you are able to see the springs from a safe distance as you walk along the boardwalk through the park.
