Panorama Loop Trail Details
The Panorama Loop Trail takes in the high Mojave Desert, where Joshua Tree flats and wide-open valleys morph into pinyon-juniper woodlands. Although prevalent throughout the park as recently as 10,000 years ago, these woodlands are now confined only to the cooler, higher elevations of the park as warmer temperatures and drier weather has prevailed. The trail begins in a Joshua Tree forest, picturesquely framed by mountains and ridges. Hikers will cross a wash and continue straight to the Warren Peak-Panorama Loop and Burnt Hill Trail junction. Due south from this point is Black Rock Canyon Wash, and the way to reach the Panorama Loop. Beyond is Black Rock Spring, which consists of few puddles and damp spots in the wash. Past this point the trail narrows considerably, and hikers may either take a direct path to Warren Peak or continue the loop, which continues up a narrow canyon wash. After about 2.5 miles, the trail moves above the wash and begins a steep climb to a narrow ridge. Here the trail crests on a jagged ridge at 5,154 feet, and hikers will be rewarded with views of the Little San Bernardino Mountains, Warren Peak, Eureka Peak and Mount San Jacinto. The trailhead for this moderately strenuous, 6.25-mile long loop trail is at campsite 30 in Black Rock Campground.
