The site of the historic, 1870s Hungry Bill's Ranch is a destination for both backpackers and off-road drivers. On foot, it's a moderately strenuous two-mile hike on roads and across open country. You can extend the hike by continuing another 5 miles to the Panamint City ghost town, but hiking up and over the pass to the old mining town involves a 4,100-foot elevation gain (as opposed to 1,100 feet to the ranch). The trail begins at the end of Johnson Canyon Road, which is off West Side Road.
