Rosie the Riveter WWII Home Front National Historical Park Details
"We Can Do It!" is the motto on the famous, sleeve-rolled-up "Rosie the Riveter" poster from World War II, and America's wartime "can do" attitude -- and the contributions of women in particular -- is celebrated at the Rosie the Riveter/World War II Home Front National Historical Park in Richmond, Calif. With so many men on active duty in the military, U.S. women entered the workforce in unprecedented numbers during the war, many of them working in defense-related industries like the shipyards in the San Francisco suburb of Richmond. Still a work in progress, the park has a visitor center in a former industrial building and is restoring the SS Red Oak Victory, the last remaining Victory Ship built at the Richmond Kaiser Shipyards. Visitors can tour the ship, take part in ranger-led walks and talks, see the Rosie the Riveter Memorial, and tour the former Ford Assembly Building (where tanks and other military vehicles were built) and other historic structures.
