Treasure Island Details
Built for the 1939 Golden Gate International Exposition, this man-made island is one of San Francisco's most historic attractions. After the World Fair, it was primarily used as a WWII training and education center for the US Navy, although after it shut down in 1997, the hangars were used as movie sets for such hits as The Matrix, Rent, and The Parent Trap. A multi-billion-dollar restoration plan is underway to build condos, shops, parks, and even a hotel on the island. But until those are finished, visitors can still go to enjoy the artwork, wineries, museums, and stunning views of the San Francisco Bay.
