The 5,360-acre Modoc National Wildlife Refuge is on the western edge of the Great Basin. The landscape is made of different types of habitats including seasonal and semi-permanent wetlands, wet meadows, riparian zones, sagebrush steppe, reservoir, and cropland. The cold desert environment serves as a migration and staging zone for ducks, geese, and other wetland birds. Field trips for schoolchildren are offered during the fall and spring, and adults can look forward to fishing and hunting waterfowl.
