Emigrant Trail Details

This route allows you to explore many of the undeveloped natural forests in Northern California. It also connects to several other major byways, including the Modoc Scenic Byway and Shasta Volcanic Scenic Byway. Starting at Tulelake, you will head southeast through the Modoc National Forest where you can stop for a hike or picnic lunch. As you reach Canby and Alturas, you can either make a short detour to the XL Indian Reservation in Cedarville or continue across the border into Oregon. Goose Lake (which straddles the state line) is a beautiful stop where you can camp right next to the water. It is worth spending a night here before heading back into California.
