El Dorado National Forest lies northeast of Sacramento, California, has a rugged topography with elevation changes in excess of 9,000 vertical feet. There are almost 300 lakes and reservoirs within this forest, and more than 600 miles of rivers and streams, some of which are still considered to be gold-bearing. Hikers in the El Dorado National Forest have many golden opportunities for adventure, like trekking to waterfalls, or scenic views of lakes tucked in between mountains on all sides, and seeing all types of game roaming the area. The Crystal Basin recreation improvement project is underway, and aimed at enhancing the experience for campers and visitors in the region.
