El Tovar Hotel Details

Other than the grand abyss itself, El Tovar may be Grand Canyon National Park's most famous attraction. The Grand Canyon Railway arrived at Grand Canyon in 1901, and El Tovar opened in 1905. This classic Rustic-style hotel, designed by architect Charles Whittlesey, is one of the original Harvey Houses built by the Santa Fe Railroad to serve passengers along their rail lines. Famous guests have included Teddy Roosevelt and other U.S. presidents, Albert Einstein, Paul McCartney, and Western author Zane Grey. The hotel, with its signature wooden turret and chalet-style balconies and terraces, has 78 guest rooms and suites, and reservations should be made as long in advance as possible, up to 13 months. Even if you don't stay here, you should take the time to poke around the main lobby with its log rafters and trophy heads, browse through the two gift shops, or splurge on a gourmet breakfast, lunch or dinner at the El Tovar Dining Room. The outdoor porch and the Lounge patio are favorite places to rest, recuperate, and enjoy a Grand Canyon sunset.
