Root Glacier Trail Details
The Root Glacier Trail leads from Kennecott to the toe of the Root Glacier, a 4 mile roundtrip walk. However, you can choose to continue further for a more challenging and adventurous trip. You can access Kennecott from McCarthy by bike, on foot, or take the commercial shuttle. From the Kennecott Visitor Center, head north to a split in the road where you will stay straight. The trail continues winding alongside the moraines of the Kennecott and Root Glaciers. At 1.5 miles, you'll come to the Root Glacier access trail where you can turn left and descend the moraine to the toe of the glacier. Be careful crossing Amazon Creek, a seasonal stream, and use extreme caution if you step onto the glacier (crampons recommended). If you continue onwards, the trail leads another 2.5 miles along the glacier; this section is actually on the Erie Mine Trail. Towards the end of the trail, the 7,000 foot high Stairway Icefall (up the valley) and Erie Mine Bunkhouse (high up on the hillside) will come into view. The trail does NOT lead to Erie mine or bunkhouse, but instead ends 3000 feet below them. The trail is 4 miles from end to end. This is a great trail to get a feel for the glacial landscape, awe-inspiring views of the Wrangells (including 16,390 foot Mount Blackbnurn), and access to other trails in the area.
