Jumbo Mine Details
This hike is for the adventurous - it is not only steep and challenging, but it will deposit you at old mining buildings and associated artifacts for exploration. To begin this trail, starting hike north from the Kennecott Mill Town on the Root Glacier Trail. After 0.5 miles, the Jumbo Mine Trail turns off to the left. About 0.5 miles further you'll have to cross Bonanza Creek, which can get your feet wet in early summer. Another 0.25 miles a trail splits off to the left leading to the Jumbo transfer station; you can also access the transfer station at the next left turn, on a gentler trail. From the transfer station, enjoy the views of the Chugach Mountains and Kennicott Valley. Continue hiking on the narrow trail up to the mine site. There are sections of scree and sand, so be cautious. Cross the headwaters of Jumbo Creek, which may be dry, and pick your way upwards (the trail may be indistinguishable on the scree slope). When you've reached the first tram tower, head up and try to stay on the lighter limestone rock slope, following it towards the top of the tram cables. Here the mine site has many artifacts and several buildings. Do not enter the buildings as they may be extremely hazardous and unstable. Feel free to explore the area but leave things as you found them.
