Kennecott Details

Recognized as a Historic Landmark on its own right, Kennecott lies five miles from the town of McCarthy. There is no vehicle access to Kennecott, visitors must park vehicles at the Kennecott River footbridge and hike. There is a shuttle from McCarthy for $5 one way as an alternative in the summer only. The town is considered the best remaining example of 20th Century copper mining and still has remains of the town's bunkhouse, saw mill, school house, hospital, and many more buildings. Many of the buildings have been abandoned for 60 years due to declining profits and eventual closure of the Kennecott Copper Corporation in 1938. Some buildings have been rehabilitated and now include a park visitor center that operates in the summer. This historic town is a worthwhile stop to any visit to the park.
