Bonanza Mine Trail Details
This hike is for the adventurous - it is not only steep and challenging, but it will deposit you at old mining buildings and associated artifacts for exploration. To begin this trail, starting hike north from the Kennecott Mill Town on the Root Glacier Trail. After 0.5 miles, the Bonanza Mine Trail splits off to the right (follow signs). Head up, and at the top of the first switchback turn left to follow the road steeply uphill. After one mile, there is a sign for the Bonanza and Jumbo mines; stay right here and follow the road almost directly to the mine. It will take you to a tram tower, from which you can see the mine buildings. Follow the path that continues to the buildings, but be careful of loose footing. Feel free to explore the area around the mine buildings, but be cautious. The area has been checked for any abandoned explosives, but if you see any, stay away and contact the park service as soon as possible. Do not enter the buildings or the mine; the entrance is closed because the mining company removed the support system and it is extremely hazardous. There are views of the spectacular snow-capped Wrangell and Chugach Mountains from the trail, almost along its whole length. If you're up for it, go past the mine buildings to the top of the ridge for more views, including the St. Elias Mountains' University Range.
