Bear Cove Details

Bear Cove is located in southeastern Aialik Bay. Don't expect solitude, because the beach here is used as a drop-off and pick-up for kayakers. The main camping area is on the beach at the back of the cove, and there is a food-storage locker on the north end of the beach. Towering above the campsites are old-growth spruce and hemlock, and behind the trees is a boggy area fed by a freshwater stream. There is also a small, less-frequented campsite on the south side of the cove, offering fantastic views of Holgate Glacier. However, there is no reliable water source or food storage locker here; you must store your food by hanging it in the trees or storing it in a bear-resistant food container. Do not use the dead standing trees here for firewood: these are 'ghost forests,' victims of the earthquake of 1964. When the land they stand on dropped several feet, the ocean water rose, submerging their roots and preserving, or essentially pickling, the trees.
