Savonoski Loop Details
This 80-mile loop is one of the most popular inland paddling routes in the park. The loop starts from Brooks Camp and travels northwest into Naknek Lake. You should hug the lake's eastern shore around the base of Mt. La Gorce and into the North Arm of Naknek Lake. In the northeastern corner of the North Arm you'll come to the Bay of Islands, which is as idyllic as it sounds. The journey to the Bay of Islands is 20 miles and takes two to three days. Fure's Cabin is located on the northeastern shores of the North Arm where you can stay free of charge. There is a short mile and a half portage from Naknek Lake to Grosvenor Lake; the trail is unmarked, but maintained, and starts behind the port-a-potties at Fure's Cabin. At Grosvenor Lake (be prepared for strong south eastern winds), follow the southern shores east for 14 miles to the lake's outlet a three-mile Class I river that feeds into Savonoski River. Class I and II Savonoski River dumps you into the Illiuk Arm of Naknek Lake. The journey from here back to Brooks Camp is another 20 miles. Hug the southern shores of Naknake here to avoid the jagged cliffs on the lake's north shore.
