Brooks Camp Visitor Center Details

This is the only regularly staffed visitor center within the park. Located at Brooks Camp along Naknek Lake, the Brooks Camp Visitor Center is a mandatory first stop for all visitors coming in to Brooks Camp, whether for the day or for an overnight. It is particularly important on your arrival to hear the “bear etiquette” talk. Don't miss this! During the salmon run in July and September, the Brooks Camp area is literally overrun with bears and park rangers do everything they can to avoid any human-bear conflict. Also at the visitor center, you can check in for your campground, sign up for ranger-led tours of Valley of the Ten Thousand Smokes, get information to plan your backcountry trip, and file your trip itinerary before heading into the backcountry. The Alaska Geographic Society runs a bookstore here where you can purchase maps, guides, and small souvenirs. The visitor center is open daily from June 1 through September 17.
