Cultural Site Details

In addition to its impressive collection of wildlife, Katmai National Park is known for its prehistoric native Alaskan campsites. The park is covered with large man-made depressions (more than 900!) that indicate the presence of subterranean dwellings dug into the earth by native residents thousands of years ago. The Cultural Site has several of these ancient dwellings as well as a reconstructed model of what a completed dwelling might have resembled. You can hike the .1-mile Cultural Site Trail on your own or take a ranger-led tour that departs every day at 2:00 pm.
