Haweswater Dam Details

The construction of Haweswater Dam in the 1930s was fraught with controversy, as the valley of Mardale, which it flooded, was populated at the time. Construction went ahead when all the farms and villages were deconstructed and moved, and now Haweswater is a four-mile-long lake with a maximum depth of 200 feet. Haweswater was Britain's first concrete buttress dam and the highest in the country. The dam is 3.7 miles west of the town of Shap.
