Shap Abbey Details
All that remains of the once-powerful Shap Abbey are the tower and the outline of the building plan. Built around 1200, the abbey was once home to a thriving monastic community, and featured a church, chapter-house and living areas grouped around a square cloister. Henry VIII closed the abbey in 1540, and most of its buildings were eventually demolished, although masonry from the abbey was used in the building of Lowther Castle as well as the Shap Market Admission to the site, 0.6-miles west of Shap, is free.
