Cockpit Stone Circle Details

East of Ullswater lake is a quieter, less-visited section of the Lake District, but it nonetheless features a long history stretching back to prehistoric times. High above the lake is a windswept area known as Moor Divock, which is scattered with prehistoric monuments, including the Cockpit Stone Circle, dating to the Bronze Age. One of the most impressive sites, it's a circular stone bank, 90 feet across, featuring larger stones set into the inner face. There are around 75 stones in total, with the tallest at around three feet in height. Just as with all stone circles, the original purpose of the Cockpit remains a mystery. The Cockpit is 2.2 miles southwest of Askham, and it's a fairly steep walk from there to the site.
