Elterwater Details

Elterwater is a small lake that lies half a mile (800 m) south-east of the village of the same name. Both are situated in valley of Great Langdale. Only a quarter of the houses in Elterwater are permanently occupied, the rest being holiday cottages. The river Brathay, which provides outflow from Elterwater, flows south to join Lake Windermere, near Ambleside. This is a quiet lake with many small bays and a mix of wooded and reedy shorelines. Look out for wildfowl, including mallards, coots and moorhens. In the past, the principal industries have been farming and quarrying, with evidence of both still very visible. In the present day, tourism is the principal source of income. There are public toilets, car parking and several inns and cafes in the village. John Ruskin attempted to set up a lace making industry here and artist Kurt Schwitters was a resident of nearby Chapel Stile, where he created one of his Merzbarn projects. **Grid Reference:** NY 33464 04096 **Address (near):** Elterwater, B5343, Ambleside LA22 9LA, UK
