Sperati Point Details

To get to Sperati Point from the Oxbow Overlook, start out on the Achenbach Trail and then go straight when you reach a fork after about 1/10 of a mile. The hike is relatively easy going from here, without much change in elevation. It leads you through open, grassy terrain until you reach Sperati Point, which offers a closer view of the Little Missouri River. It is believed that at one time the Little Missouri River traveled north, hooking up to a network of rivers that drained into the Hudson Bay in northeastern Canada. The river was blocked during the last ice age and rerouted itself east, creating the oxbow seen from Sperati Point.
