Oxbow Overlook Details
The Oxbow Overlook is at the end of the North Unit Scenic Drive and features long-distance views of the southwestern section of the North Unit wilderness area. The overlook gets its name from an oxbow bend of the Little Missouri River. It is believed that at one time the Little Missouri River traveled north, hooking up to a network of rivers that drained into the Hudson Bay in northeastern Canada. The river was blocked during the last ice age, however, and rerouted itself east, creating the oxbow at Sperati Point that you can hike to from the overlook. In 1886, Theodore Roosevelt passed through here in pursuit of thieves that had stolen his boat from Elkhorn Ranch, about 25 miles away. Roosevelt's efforts were successful: he captured the thieves, who were later tried and convicted. The elusive bighorn sheep may be spotted in this area by using binoculars and focusing on the cliffs. The Oxbow Overlook is also were you can access the 17-mile Achenbach Trail and the 1.5-mile hike out to Sperati Point.
