Bear Lake Trail Details
The Bear Lake Trail stretches around 1.5 miles one-way and takes visitors through a dense hardwood hammock scattered with mangroves. More than 50 different tree species line the trail, which follows the Homestead Canal; the trees attracts lots of woodland birds, making this an awesome area to go birding. The Bear Lake Trail is two miles north of the Flamingo Visitor Center. You'll have to either bike, drive, or walk to the end of Bear Lake Road to get to the beginning of the trail. No RVs are allowed on Bear Lake Road. Bear Lake Road is typically closed to cars from June until about mid-October because of water on the road, which creates some major potholes. The canal can also flood. Be prepared to walk or bike if visiting during this time.
