Chekika Details

The Chekika day use area was closed indefinitely to visitors in the winter of 2013 because of budget shortfalls. Everglades National Park Superintendent Dan Kimball commented that, "We do not have sufficient funding to operate and maintain all of our buildings, grounds, and facilities, and Chekika was selected for closure based on highest resource priorities and service to the most visitors." The area will remain closed until sufficient resources are available to maintain the surrounding facilities and operations in the area. Chekika can be accessed with special-use permits only.
