Miners Mountain Details

To your left is a great example of what differential erosion -- the tendency of different types of rock to erode at different rates -- can do over time to a face of solid rock. Here, the softer Moenkopi and Chinle sandstone eroded away and undermined the harder Wingate Sandstone, causing big chunks of the cliff face to your left to fall away. The uplift of sedimentary rock typical of the Waterpocket Fold is evident in the gentle slope of Miners Mountain, to the west.
