Oyler Mine Details
Around the turn of the 20th century, deposits of uranium were discovered here in the bottom layer of the Chinle Formation rock. The Oyler Mine produced uranium for medicinal use beginning in 1901, and later for atomic energy, but the yield was relatively small. You can see two old entrances to the mine, but they are barred over and closed by the National Park Service, probably for very good reason: a cave-in or radiation poisoning could definitely ruin your whole vacation.
