Giant Slide Trail Details
Giant Slide Trail is one of the most difficult trails in the Park, leading up Sargent Mountain, Mt. Desert Island's second highest peak, and certainly one of the most interesting. The flat summit is home to wonderful examples of sub alpine vegetation, from alpine club moss to mountain sandwort, and has great views of the Bubbles and Jordan Pond. Remaining fairly isolated, the trail begins at St. James Church, a small stone chapel near the outskirts of the Park, and approaches the mountain from the northwest and quickly reaching the Park's boundary before steeply climbing up Giant Slide's massive boulders. Trailhead: 1.1 mile from the junction of Route 198 and 233 begins on private property.
