Sargent Drive Picnic Area Details
A river valley carved by glaciers, but later drowned by the sea, Somes Sound has a fjard's characteristic shallow southern mouth, deeper waters to the north, and a shoreline that plunges straight into the water. As you drive, look for Hall Quarry, a small community at the base of Acadia Mountain that once produced pink granite. Man O'War Brook -- named for the French and English warships that once took on water here -- flows into the sound from Acadia Mountain. Valley Cove, sheltered by the cliffs of St. Sauveur Mountain, is a nesting spot for peregrine falcons. Facilities: Picnic Area, Parking, Grill, Restrooms, Hand-carry Boat Launch
