Wawona Campground (W8) Details

From 1891 to 1905, the campground served as a United State Army encampment. When Yosemite National Park was first created, it was administrated by the United States Army. Cavalry units from the Presidio in San Francisco were assigned here from the months of May to October. The Army mapped and built trails, stocked remote lakes and rivers, and protected the Park from trespassing cattle. In August 1906, Camp A. E. Wood was abandoned when the Army units were transferred to Yosemite Valley. In 1922, Camp Hoyle was established as a public campground and was renamed to Camp A. E. Wood in 1951. Today the campground is called Wawona and is open year-round. Roadside marker: W8
