Two Rivers National Wildlife Refuge Details
The Two Rivers National Wildlife Refuge is made up of 9,225 acres between the Illinois and Mississippi Rivers. It was established in 1958 to provide habitat for the native and migratory species in the area. Management uses water manipulation techniques to divert the rivers and create wetland and aquatic habitats for the aquatic mammals, fish populations, and around 300 bird species. Bald Eagles are particularly numerous and more may be seen here than in any of the other 48 states. They often spend the winter months fishing in the open river areas, and over 500 pairs of the raptors have been counted here at once.
