Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge Details
The Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge was established to maintain wildlife conservation, agriculture, industry, and recreation. The refuge is home to a multitude of native species that can be seen throughout the year. In springtime, the area is ripe with strutting turkeys and summer is the best time to scout for bluebirds nesting in one of the approximately 200 bluebird boxes throughout the grounds. In fall, the restricted areas are open for self-guided driving tours around the farm fields where whitetail deer can be seen gorging on the soybeans. Although not the ideal time to visit, winter is perfect for viewing migratory birds that head south once the northern lakes freeze over. Mating pairs of bald eagles are particularly easy to spot in the colder temperatures. Search for them in large stick bundle nests in the sturdy trees along the lake shores.
