Tonto National Monument Details
The Salt River has long provided a rare source of water to residents of Arizona's Sonoran Desert, and the Salt River Valley was populated and farmed by the Salado people during the 13th-15th centuries. Most lived in the valley, but some built cliff dwellings in the valley walls. Visitors to Tonto National Monument can take a short self-guided hike to the 28-room Lower Cliff Dwelling or sign up for the 3-mile, ranger-led hike to the 40-room Upper Cliff Dwelling, the latter sheltered by a large cave. Exhibits at the park visitor center include examples of the colorful pottery and textiles produced by the Salado people.
