Apache Trail Historic Road Details

This rugged, primarily unpaved road twists and turns through some of Arizona's most rural landscapes. For 40 miles, you will drive past ghost towns, scenic lakes, and cactus fields from Apache Junction to Theodore Roosevelt Dam, with plenty of opportunities to stop for a bit of outdoor adventure. Named after the Apache Indian tribe, this trail was mainly used as a stagecoach for travelers heading through the Superstition Mountains in the early 1900s (although the tribe was the main labor force behind its construction). It soon opened up to the public after being advertised as a scenic journey for drivers Because the road is steep and unpaved, it is not recommended for large SUVs or RVs. But regardless of the vehicle, all drivers need to take extra precaution while traveling down this remote trail.
