Founded in 1972 after Laurence and Lorna Marshall donated the land, the Wapak National Wildlife Refuge became New Hampshire's very first refuge. With 1,672 acres of land, the refuge attracts incredible wildlife and a rich mountainous ecosystem. It encompasses 2,278 feet of Mount Monadnock and therefore has mountain wildlife for visitors to encounter. There are bear, coyote, mink, weasel, fox, and a countless amount of migratory hawks and birds. Visitors are encouraged to participate in the myriad of activities at the refuge throughout the year.
