Whiskeytown National Recreation Area Details
Lake or waterfall? Choose your pleasure, or experience both, at California's Whiskeytown National Recreation Area. Whiskeytown Lake is the centerpiece of this 42,497-acre park, popular for boating, fishing, swimming and sunbathing. Surrounding the lake is 39,000 acres of live oak, pine, fir, and cedar forests, with hiking trails leading to several waterfalls. For example, a 3.4-mile trail leads to Whiskeytown Falls, which drops 220 feet. The woodlands are home to mountain lions, black bear, deer, grey fox, and other mammals, as well as many avian species including bald eagles and spotted owls. The Tower House Historic District is a former gold-mining community that includes a prospector's home dating to 1852; park rangers lead tours of historic buildings and mines. Visitors with 4WD vehicles can drive to the top of 6,199-foot Shasta Bally. Overnight stays are permitted in the backcountry as well as established campgrounds.
