Petaluma Adobe State Historic Park Details

This park is home to one of the largest Monterey Colonial-style adobe houses. Built-in 1836, the two-story Rancho Petaluma Adobe is made from redwood timber and adobe bricks. Although originally built as a fortification system to defend against invading tribes and settlers, it was mainly used as a cattle and sheep ranch, tannery, smithy, and grist mill. Between 1836 and 1857, the ranch employed over 2,00 Native American workers, although operations declined after the Mexican-American War. After becoming a California State Historic Landmark in 1932, it was restored to its full glory and opened to the public as a park.
