Mono Lake Tufa State Natural Reserve Details
These unusual rock formations protruding from the middle of Mono Lake are called "tufa towers." Made from calcium carbonate, these jagged spires and columns are one of the most unique features of this natural reserve. In fact, the reserve was created specifically to protect these formations, which serves as a habitat for nearly 2 million birds. There is plenty of fun, outdoorsy things to do on and around this 65-square mile lake. Boating, hiking, birdwatching, and cross-country skiing are just a few activities to name. Swimming is also a unique experience, as the waters are incredibly salty (approximately 2.5x as salty as the ocean!)
