Tufa Towers Details
If you are visiting Mono Lake in the Eastern Sierras, these unusual rock formations are hard to miss. They get their craggy, uneven appearance from a mixture of calcium carbonate minerals found in the lake, which eventually turns into tufa (a type of limestone). While these towers remained underwater for thousands of years, they were recently exposed in the 1940s due to falling water levels. The water diversions from Mono Lake are now monitored with the otherworldly tufa towers protruding proudly from the surface.
