Endicott Rock State Historic Site Details
This state park on the shores of Lake Winnipesaukee contains one of the oldest public monuments in New England and one of the earliest pieces of evidence of European inhabitants. It is a large rock with the initials of John Endicott, the longest-serving governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, as well as two of his surveyors. The rock dates back to August 1, 1652, and marks the northernmost part of the Merrimack River (although this is incorrectly marked as the headwaters are actually further north).
