Laura Singleton Walker was a Georgia native known for her literary abilities, enthusiasm for education and history, and for her work as a naturalist. She had previously encouraged officials to buy land for conservation but was denied despite her efforts. Later on, the area, known today as Laura S. Walker State Park, was purchased and became the first park to be named after a woman. The land is located on the edge of Okefenokee Swamp and is home to the threatened blue heron, alligators, oaks, the state gopher tortoise, and pitcher plants.
