The first Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) camp west of the Mississippi River was established in Little Horseshoe Park in 1933, and the 200 laborers who worked for this early federal jobs program became known as the Woodpecker Army. Shuttled to work in the old, red sightseeing buses that earned their nickname, the CCC men worked to remove dead and diseased trees, landscaped roadsides and tourist areas, built trails, and fought forest fires, among other work.
