Pullman National Monument Details
Working as a Pullman railroad porter was a desirable job for African-American men of the late 19th and early 20th century, and the Pullman company created a planned community on the south side of Chicago that offered housing for their families. Rents were high, saloons were banned, but the neighborhood was safe. Still, the cost and strict rules that workers lived under led to a violent strike in 1894, which in turn sounded the death-knell for the company town of Pullman. The Pullman National Monument preserves some of the former workers' homes and includes tours of the former Pullman sleeping car factory, the A. Philip Randolph Pullman Porter Museum, parks, and a visitor center.
